30 Mar I Quit My Job To Help YOU Succeed In Career & Life
Today, I quit my job. I let go of my handsome six-figure income, my corporate badge, corporate card, office key, cell phone, laptop, and parking pass. I’m giving it all back to Corporate America. I’m exchanging it for freedom. See, when I turned 35 nearly 4 months ago, I prayed a special prayer to God. I said, “God, I do not want my next 35 years to be like my last 35 and I am willing to do WHATEVER it takes to create an amazing life—one that is beyond my wildest dreams! I’m willing to face my fears, take a leap of faith, and break the chains of anything that’s holding me back—physically, mentally, and emotionally.” And after that prayer and declaration, the shift started. That brings me to today. Did I already tell you that today is my last day in Corporate America?
“Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” – Winston Churchill
See, if you think that this is just about my last job, you’ve already missed the point. It is about a call on my life. Freedom means that I can wake up every morning and make a contribution to this world in a way that impacts and inspires lives. It means that I can work and play. Freedom means that I choose. We were not created to always seek permission. My life is an example of what can happen when you are willing to take your faith walk and when you believe that you, alone, are worthy, deserving, and enough.
“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between [her] work and [her] play, [her] labor and [her] leisure, [her] mind and [her] body, [her] information and [her] recreation, [her] love and [her] religion. [She] hardly knows which is which. [She] simply pursues [her] vision of excellence at whatever [she] does, leaving others to decide whether [she] is working or playing. To [her], [she’s] always doing both.” – James Michener
Now, do not mistake my message. Corporate America works. It feeds families, it fuels passions, and it can help you to grow and evolve! It has done all of these things for me and more. It was worth it and for that I am grateful for every past opportunity to grow and lead. But when you have a calling on your life—when you feel called to be more, do more, and have more—you cannot run from it. You cannot hide from it. And you damn sure cannot do both. You cannot follow the calling over your life while you are following a calling over someone else’s. So, now is my turn.
“You have the ability to move mountains from other people’s lives by simply moving the mountains in your life. When you do the unimaginable, at least one other person will say, ‘Ah, she made it look so achievable…let me give it a try!’ The world needs more people willing to give “it” a try.” – Jennifer Tardy
Now, if you think that this post is about HOW I went from a prayer and declaration 4 months ago to comfortably quitting my job, you have missed the point again. This is not about how it happened. That’s another post. It is THAT it happened. It is WHY it happened.
“Until I am committed, there is hesitancy, a chance to draw back. But the moment I definitely commit myself, then God moves also, and a whole stream of events erupt. All manner of unforeseen incidents, meetings, persons, and material assistance which I could have never dreamed would come my way begin to flow toward me—the moment I make a commitment.” – John C. Maxwell
You do not get off the hook. You do not get to look at my life and say that I’m different and that my life’s circumstances allowed me to take this leap of faith. There were 1,000 reasons not to take this leap! There will never be a perfect circumstance for you to take a leap of faith in your own life and career. I am no different than anyone else in this world. I still have fears, doubts, and insecurities. But I keep moving forward in spite of them all. My fears will never be bigger than my desire to have an amazing life experience. You only get one shot!
You can follow me if you’d like to. Watch me travel the world, love on my babies a ton more, juice for my community, write more, heal more, open up more. Watch me as I continue to give the best career advice and celebrate with people as they land amazing career opportunities–in and outside of Corporate America.
“Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
So, how do I feel today? I feel amazing!!! Only God knows the magnitude of the gratefulness in my heart and the peace I feel today.
So, celebrate with me. Because THIS—my life—is my definition of #BlackCareerSucess. I continue to pray that you find your definition.
Sending you Love & Light,
