03 May Day #123 | May 03, 2018 – Find Proof to Validate Your Assumptions, Or Let Them Go!
The hardest and most common barriers I help career coaching clients navigate are the emotional barriers they create within their own mind. The thoughts we imagine and the images we create about why things ARE most commonly prevent us from living our highest potential. It is natural to not to ask clarifying questions; our tendency is to make assumptions about people, places, things and situations. We fill in the gaps in our own mind. Imagine trying to get a new job but later getting rejected. The less you know the reason for the rejection, the more you begin to conjure up stories in your mind—usually about our own worth and ability—and then you take those thoughts and that energy with you throughout future interviews. Look, there are two lessons I’d invite you to take with you, instead. First, watch how you fill in the gap. The next time you make an assumption, or fill in the gap with your own thoughts, pause and ask yourself, “is there ANY proof to validate the thought I’m having right now?” If you cannot find proof to validate an assumption, then let it go! Second, seek clarity. Find enough courage to ask direct questions that give you the information that you need to fill in the gap the right way, from the right person. Instead of spending your time assuming, find a better use for this time. There’s a world waiting for you to win. Do something today to take one step closer!
